If you have flexible spending account (FSA) dollars left, many common dental services, such as exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings and crowns, are often eligible expenses. Purely cosmetic treatments usually aren’t. Round Rock patients should check their plan’s deadline now, because many FSAs have a use-it-or-lose-it rule at the end of the plan year.
Early November in Round Rock brings cooler mornings, packed school calendars and the first wave of holiday planning. It’s also when many people open an FSA statement and realize there’s money left. Below, we explain what dental care FSA funds commonly cover, what usually doesn’t qualify, and how to check your plan’s rules before time runs out.
Why Your FSA Deadline Matters Right Now
A flexible spending account lets you set aside pre-tax money from your paycheck for eligible health expenses. The catch is that many FSAs work on a use-it-or-lose-it basis. Money you don’t spend by the end of the plan year may be forfeited.
Every plan is a little different, so it helps to know a few basics:
- Your plan year may not match the calendar year. Many plans end December 31, but some end at other times.
- Some employers offer extra time. A plan may include a short grace period after the plan year ends, or let you carry over a limited amount. Others offer neither.
- Claim deadlines can differ from spending deadlines. Some plans give you extra time after the plan year to submit receipts. That’s separate from the deadline to actually receive care.
Waiting can also cost you a convenient appointment. Between Thanksgiving, school breaks and holiday travel, schedules in Round Rock, Georgetown, Hutto and Pflugerville fill up fast in late November and December. Booking early gives you more choice of times.
Dental Services FSA Funds Commonly Cover
In general, FSA funds can be used for care that prevents, diagnoses or treats a dental problem. Your plan administrator has the final word, but these services are commonly considered eligible.
Preventive Care: Exams, Cleanings and X-Rays
Routine checkups are one of the easiest ways to use remaining funds. A dental exam and cleaning removes plaque and tartar buildup and lets your dentist check your teeth and gums. Digital X-rays help spot problems that can’t be seen with the eye alone.
If you’ve been putting off your six-month visit, year-end is a natural time to catch up.
Restorative Care: Fillings and Crowns
If a previous exam found a cavity, now may be a good time to take care of it. Small cavities are usually simpler to fix than large ones, and dental fillings repair the damage and restore strength.
For a tooth that’s cracked, heavily filled or weakened, your dentist may recommend dental crowns to protect it. A crown is a custom cap that covers the whole visible part of the tooth.
Other Treatment Your Dentist Recommends
Care such as root canal treatment, extractions and dental implants is also often eligible, because it treats a dental problem or restores function. Larger treatment may take more than one visit, so ask about timing early if you want to use this year’s funds.
Insurance Copays and Deductibles
If you have dental insurance, your FSA can often cover your share of the bill, such as copays, coinsurance and deductibles. Using both together can stretch your benefits further.
What FSA Funds Usually Don’t Cover
It’s just as important to know what typically isn’t eligible, so you don’t get a surprise denied claim:
- Cosmetic-only treatment. Professional teeth whitening and other procedures done purely to change appearance generally don’t qualify.
- Everyday hygiene items. Regular toothpaste, floss and similar products are generally treated as personal care items.
- Prepayment for future care. Many plans count the date care is provided, not the date you pay. Paying in December for treatment you’ll receive in January may not count toward this year.
Some treatments fall in a gray area. For example, a procedure can be partly cosmetic and partly restorative. When in doubt, ask your plan administrator before your appointment.
How to Check Your Plan’s Rules and Deadlines
A few minutes of homework can save you money. Here’s a simple checklist:
- Log in to your FSA account or call the number on your FSA card. Check your current balance.
- Find your plan year end date. Don’t assume it’s December 31.
- Ask about a grace period or carryover. Find out exactly how much time or money, if any, you’d have after the deadline.
- Confirm the claim submission deadline. Put it on your calendar.
- Ask what documentation is required. Many plans want an itemized receipt showing the date of service, the service provided and the amount you paid.
- Check your dental insurance too. Annual maximums often reset at the start of the plan year, so unused insurance benefits may also be on the clock.
If you have a health savings account (HSA) instead of an FSA, those funds generally roll over from year to year. You don’t face the same year-end pressure, but the same kinds of dental care are typically eligible.
