A professional cleaning removes hardened tartar and bacteria-filled buildup, including below the gumline, that brushing and flossing at home can’t reach. October is National Dental Hygiene Month, a good reminder for Round Rock families to put their next cleaning on the calendar.
Most of us brush twice a day and floss when we remember, and that daily routine matters. But even the most careful brushers can’t do everything a trained hygienist can. Here’s what happens during a cleaning, why it matters for your teeth and gums, and how to fit one into a busy fall.
Why October Is a Good Time to Focus on Cleanings
National Dental Hygiene Month puts the spotlight on the daily habits and professional care that keep smiles healthy. The timing works well for many families in Round Rock and nearby neighborhoods like Forest Creek, Teravista and Mesa Park.
- School routines have settled in. By October, carpools, practices and homework schedules are usually set, so it’s easier to plan around them.
- The holidays are coming. Getting a cleaning done now means one less thing to worry about from Thanksgiving through New Year’s.
- Halloween treats are on the way. A cleaning before the candy bowls come out gives everyone a fresh start.
- The year is winding down. If you have dental benefits, many plans reset on a calendar-year basis, so fall is a practical time to use preventive coverage you may already have.
What a Professional Cleaning Removes That Home Care Can’t
Your toothbrush and floss are designed to remove soft plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth every day. A professional cleaning goes further.
Tartar (Calculus)
When plaque isn’t fully removed, it can harden into tartar, also called calculus. Tartar bonds firmly to tooth surfaces, and no amount of brushing will scrub it off. It tends to collect along the gumline and behind the lower front teeth. A hygienist uses specialized instruments to gently remove it.
Buildup Below the Gumline
The gums form a small pocket around each tooth. Plaque and tartar can settle just under the gum’s edge, where bristles and floss don’t reach well. Left alone, this buildup can irritate the gums and contribute to gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease. Common signs include:
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Red, puffy or tender gums
- Bad breath that doesn’t go away
If you notice any of these, it’s worth having your gums checked. Only an exam can tell you what’s going on in your mouth.
Surface Stains
Coffee, tea and other everyday favorites can leave stains that dull your smile over time. Polishing at the end of a cleaning helps remove many surface stains and leaves teeth feeling smooth. If you’d like a brighter shade than polishing alone can give you, ask about professional teeth whitening at your visit.
What Happens During a Dental Exam & Cleaning
If it’s been a while since your last visit, knowing what to expect can make it easier to book. A typical dental exam and cleaning includes:
- A review of your health history. Let us know about any medication changes, health conditions or concerns.
- Scaling. The hygienist removes plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces and along the gumline.
- Polishing. A gritty paste smooths the teeth and lifts surface stains.
- Flossing. This clears out anything left between teeth and shows any areas where gums are tender.
- Digital X-rays when needed. These help the dentist see between teeth and below the surface.
- An exam by the dentist. The dentist checks your teeth and gums, looks for signs of decay or wear, and talks with you about any findings.
When a small problem like a cavity is found early, it can often be treated with a simple tooth-colored filling before it grows into something more involved. That’s one of the biggest benefits of staying on schedule.
How Often Should You Get a Professional Cleaning?
Many people do well with a cleaning about every six months, but there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Your dentist may suggest a different schedule based on your gum health, your history of cavities, and how quickly tartar builds up on your teeth.
The best way to know what’s right for you is to come in for an exam. We’ll look at your mouth and give you a recommendation that fits your needs. We won’t simply hand you a generic schedule.
Make Your Home Routine Count Between Visits
Professional cleanings and good home care work as a team. The better your daily habits, the easier each cleaning tends to be. A few simple tips:
- Brush for two full minutes, twice a day, with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste.
- Angle the brush toward the gumline. That’s where plaque likes to hide.
- Clean between your teeth daily. Use floss, floss picks or interdental brushes.
- Sip water throughout the day. It’s a good habit for warm Central Texas afternoons, and it helps rinse away food and sugar.
- Go easy on constant snacking and sweet drinks. Frequent sipping on sweetened coffee or tea keeps teeth bathed in sugar.
- Replace your toothbrush regularly, and sooner if the bristles look frayed.
